I’ll never be good enough. The Universe replied, that’s not what I see, but I’ll follow your instructions despite my opinions. As you so ordered, I’ll put in your path everything that will reinforce this belief, it’s just shameful you don’t see what I see.

I’ll never find love. The Universe replied, I’ve worked very hard to bring love into your life but everyone I brought was never good enough at least in your eyes. Frankly, I’m perplexed by you. I thought I’m in a better position to know what your soul needs. However, your responses to my suggestions has me wondering who is this person standing in front of me?

I’ll never find my passion. The Universe replied, now you’re trying my patience. I handed you gifts the day you turned five. I said remember what I tell you because I’ll only say this once. I’ll always be by your side. These gifts it will be your responsibility to learn how to use them. Although this is always the most difficult part for me. “Free Will” mean despite what I want, it’s your choice to choose to use the gifts I give you.

I’ll never… [The Universe interrupts with frustration] Uuuggghhh! [the universe excuses its self] pardon me, I’m sorry, please begin again.

To “Be Part of the Narrative” is to have a raw unapologetic conversation with yourself. It’s stripping away the bullshit and lies and accepting your authentic self. It’s visualizing and vocalizing to the universe the person you want to be. It’s seeking guidance and preparing yourself for the life you want to have. It’s knowing when to surrender to the flow. It’s understanding you’re only responsible for the space and time you occupy. It’s knowing unconditionally that you’re enough. It’s being the writer of your narrative. It’s being free.

I have been through so much but yet they do not see. For I cannot fit with my own race or other races. I just want them to not judge me by what the media portrays. I want the opportunity to share my story and let people know I am completely different from what they assume about me and my race. Please don’t judge me until you get to know me. I spent the last 22 years fighting for my life. Since the day I made it to the earth from my mother’s womb, it has been a struggle. I worked hard to not fall into the norm and rise above the expectations they had for me. But as I began to climb people around me began to sink and sink. They did not see me progression as something positive but more like I was changing for something different. They exiled me because my grandparents decided they wanted something different for me. I was not raised by my parents and miss every opportunity that so many take for granted everyday. But as I climbed higher the fewer blacks I saw. Yes, I am a African-American male. I fight everyday in college to continue to beat the odds that are stacked up against me. I don’t have to have the American dream but just a simple life better than that of my grandparents will do me just fine. To have some form of friends who understand the struggle I have come through and potential I have within myself. You will probably never see as an American Male because the color of my skin. But I am just as American as you and want to be treated as an individual, before I get judged for my race.

*Random Thoughts & Occurrences: “Have You Ever Really Listened To Someone Describe Your Character? Wait, Is That Really Me?”

Photograph by Nate Bittinger

Obviously, this is only their perception, good or bad it sometimes makes you think. Damn, wait a minute is that really me? When it is positive, I wish I wholeheartedly felt all the good things others see in me. What’s strange is when I hear them speak, it is as if they are speaking about a complete stranger. Someone I one day hope to meet! When it is negative, I often think damn, If they only knew the words used to describe me doesn’t represent the person I am underneath.
